Tattu launches brand new summer menu in Birmingham

I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to recently dine at Tattu, Birmingham, the perfect setting for a modern Chinese dining experience in the heart of the West Midlands.

My friend and I had a Monday evening booking, just in time to sample the newly launched ‘Summer at Tattu’ menu. As this was my first visit to Tattu I was unable to compare the menu to previous menu options, but looked forward to getting stuck into this version.

We entered the restaurant which is close to Snow Hill Station and were immediately impressed by the show-stopping decor; cherry blossoms decorate the entire restaurant – it’s simply beautiful. We were shown from the entrance to our table on the ground floor and an already busy restaurant area – impressive for a regular weekday evening. The design of the restaurant exuberates quality and high standards; pleasantly this is also represented in the menus and the food which we later enjoyed.

Our server introduced herself as Becky before explaining how the menu is arranged and giving us a few minutes to take it all in. There’s so much choice and every dish appears to have been carefully planned – we finally opted to share a selection of dishes from the small plates.

Becky confirmed that the small plates would be served as they are ready (everything is freshly prepared) which of course we were fine with.

I also ordered the Skull Candy cocktail, a fruity, vodka-based drink, albeit very sweet.

Within a few minutes of placing our order, the food started to arrive.

The Black Cod Croquettes were crisp yet full of flavour, harnessing the combination of ginger, coriander and chilli garlic aioli.

The Mixed Dim Sum comes in two options to cater for meat and vegetarian options. Becky recommended that we should eat this dish first to enjoy it at it’s best – advice which we gladly accepted.

I rarely choose vegetables as an accompaniment to a meal however the Tenderstem Broccoli was a wise choice. My friend and I both love truffles and the flavours worked beautifully together.

At Tattu the Salmon Sashizza is light and easy to enjoy. The dish is served with Yuzu kosho aioli, truffle tapenade and pickled cucumber, all well encompassed into a single bite-sized mouthful to be enjoyed.

We had also wanted to try the Duck Egg Fried Rice, however the staff forgot to serve it to the table. It was the only mishap in our meal and honestly, we didn’t even notice until we had started on eating our dessert (we’ll still return to order it again though!).

For dessert we wanted to try the Dessert Wontons, a combination of chocolate, Szechuan strawberry and banana caramel. The wontons were delicious, crispy and filled with chocolate which went really well with the banana caramel in particular.

Throughout our meal we found the service and quality of food to be exceptional. Staff really seemed to know the menu well and comfortably recommended dishes that they had tried. Our meal for two came to a little more than £100 which seems reasonable for a restaurant delivering such excellence in this part of the city.

Tattu has nailed the concept of fine dining with an ‘Instagrammable’ twist. Make it photo worthy, make it memorable. The refined quality and presentation of the dishes really sets the standard for a great restaurant that I look forward to visiting again soon.
